How To Promote Yourself Without Looking Like A Jerk

In a recent video I told you to brag about your accomplishments.  If YOU don’t talk about the things you do better than anyone else, nobody else will talk about them.

Here’s the video (it’s less than one minute in length).

What do you do if you are uncomfortable talking about yourself?

One of the best ways to promote yourself without looking foolish is by answering questions in an interview setting.

When someone asks you  direct questions about things you’ve done, you can answer favorably and promote yourself.

Here is a step-by-step guide to using an interview as a promotional strategy.

Step one: Write out the things you want people to know about you and your business.

Make a list of the accomplishments you want to talk about. Make sure you have specifics spelled out.

Step two: Put together a list of questions someone can ask you that will allow you to respond by talking about these specific accomplishments.

Step three: Find someone to interview you and ask these questions.

Step four: Record the audio and video of the interview.

How to use this interview:

Include educational information with the interview and you can send it out to people before you meet them. You can also include it as part of a press kit.

Benefits of the interview strategy:

  • It allows you to build your credibility without having to brag.
  • It provides you with a valuable educational and promotional piece you can send to prospective clients.
  • This positions you as an expert consultant vs. a sales professional looking to make a deal.
  • It gives you another reason to connect with people who are interested in your product and service.

One thing to keep in mind while employing this strategy: You must provide valuable educational content as well as information about you and your business.  This helps to keep the listener/viewer engaged.

Bragging is necessary but you don’t have to be the one doing it.  Use this interview strategy as a way to build your credibility and promote your business.  It will help you sell more and it will make your job easier.
